Funding from Emissions Reduction Alberta supports commercialization of modular robotic fabrication platform for Alberta’s construction sector

RoBIM Technologies Inc. (RoBIM) today announced it has been awarded $2.81 million in funding from Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) through its Industrial Transformation Challenge to advance the commercialization of its HIVE robotic fabrication platform. The funding will support the development of production-grade prefabrication systems and the launch of RoBIM’s first Robotic Fabrication-as-a-Service (RFaaS) facility in Edmonton. The project is designed to help the construction industry improve productivity, reduce labour dependence and accelerate the delivery of residential and commercial buildings across Alberta and Canada.

The construction industry faces a convergence of critical challenges. First, productivity has stagnated for decades, with projects often taking longer and costing more than planned. Second, labour shortages are intensifying, with a significant portion of the workforce nearing retirement and insufficient new entrants replacing them. Third, construction methods generate significant material waste and emissions, making it difficult to meet sustainability targets. Finally, most construction firms - particularly prefabricators and modular builders - lack access to robotic fabrication and automation due to high capital costs and technical complexity.

RoBIM’s HIVE platform addresses these challenges through a modular, AI-driven robotic fabrication system designed specifically for prefabricating components used in residential and commercial construction projects. Unlike traditional fixed robotic factories, HIVE systems are adaptable, scalable and capable of handling low-volume, high-mix production environments. By combining simulation software, automated robotic code generation and multifunctional robotic hardware, a HIVE enables prefabrication of building components with greater speed, precision and consistency. The platform optimizes labour requirements, minimizes waste and enables deployment off-site, near-site or directly on construction sites, significantly improving project timelines and cost efficiency.

“Construction is one of the largest and most important industries in the world, yet it has seen virtually no productivity growth in decades,” said Bruce Alton, CEO of RoBIM Technologies Inc. “With support from ERA, we are accelerating the transition to a more automated, scalable and sustainable model for prefabrication in residential and commercial construction. The HIVE platform is designed to give contractors and prefabricators access to advanced robotics without the traditional barriers of cost and complexity.”

“By investing in these technologies across the province, we are strengthening Alberta’s energy and industrial systems,” said Justin Riemer, CEO, Emissions Reduction Alberta. “These investments are cutting emissions, creating opportunities for Albertans, and positioning Alberta as a global leader in the development and deployment of clean technology.”

With this ERA-funded project and a recently launched Seed funding investment round, RoBIM will advance the HIVE platform from prototype to full commercial deployment by building multiple production-grade systems and validating performance in real-world conditions. This includes the establishment of a RFaaS facility in Edmonton that will serve as both a production hub and demonstration site for the industry before rolling out facilities across Canada.
